Post-Operative Instructions for Extractions

Dr. Russo’s EMERGENCY #: (941) 955-3100

  1. Gauze has been placed over the extraction site and should be held in position with some biting pressure for approximately 2 hours.
  2. Do not rinse your mouth for the next 24 hours. Do not spit. Do not use a straw. It is important that the blood clot not be dislodged from the extraction site.
  3. After 24 hours, you may rinse your mouth with some warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a full glass of water) four to five times a day.
  4. Post operative bleeding-- A small amount of bleeding is normal and desirable. If there is excessive bleeding, place some gauze over the extraction site and bite down for 30 minutes, by the clock. Repeat if necessary. If bleeding persists, a tea bag may be utilized to stop bleeding. Simply moisten the tea bag and bite down using pressure. The tannic acid in the tea will help to stop bleeding.
  5. Pain-- Some discomfort may be expected. Take 2 Aspirin, Advil or prescription medication 1 hour after the extraction and then every four hours as needed for pain.
  6. Swelling-- Some swelling may be expected in many cases following extractions. Using an ice bag on the affected side for the first 24 hours will help to minimize swelling. Moist heat should be applied if swelling persists after 24 hours.
  7. Food-- Soft foods and liquids are best for the first 24 hours and then return to normal eating. Do not eat hard or crunchy things like popcorn or peanuts which may become lodged in the extraction site.
  8. Do not smoke. Smoking delays and complicates healing. Smoking should be avoided for the first 48 hours.
  9. Boney Spicules-- After surgery, you may feel hard projections at the site of the extraction. This is usually a boney prominence, which surrounds the tooth root. They generally are resorbed or work themselves out in several weeks.
  10. In case of emergency, please telephone Dr. Russo at the office at 955-3100.
